Our Story

Our Journey to Empowerment

In 2014, My Sister’s Closet of MD began its journey with a simple yet powerful mission: to provide free professional clothing to women in need. Since then, we’ve expanded our efforts to include workshops, mentorship programs, and networking events, empowering women to rebuild their lives with confidence, strength, and purpose.

Today, with the support of our donors, sponsors, and volunteers, we continue to create opportunities that help women overcome challenges and achieve their personal and professional goals.

Our Mission and Vision

Mission

At My Sister’s Closet (MSC), we are committed to empowering individuals in career transition, the unemployed, underemployed, and homeless by providing critical tools, resources, and training that foster personal and professional growth. We bridge the gap to workforce development and equip participants with the skills and confidence they need to achieve sustainable economic independence, long-term career success, and a brighter future.

Our vision is to create a world where every woman, regardless of her circumstances, has the opportunity to thrive in her career and personal life. Through comprehensive support, MSC envisions empowering women to build lasting careers, financial stability, and a sense of purpose, ultimately creating stronger communities and a more equitable society.

Problem

In the Washington, DC Metropolitan area, nearly 30% of women are either unemployed or underemployed, and over 40% of women living in poverty are single mothers facing significant challenges in securing stable employment. Additionally, women account for approximately 40% of the homeless population in DC, as reported by the National Alliance to End Homelessness (2022) and DC Department of Human Services (2023).

These individuals face substantial barriers to entering the workforce, including lack of access to essential professional training, career resources, and mentorship. Without targeted support, many remain trapped in cycles of poverty, unemployment, and housing instability, preventing them from achieving long-term economic independence.

My Sister’s Closet seeks to bridge these gaps by providing critical tools, resources, and workforce development programs to empower women in career transition, helping them to build sustainable careers and achieve financial security.

MSC offers a holistic solution to the challenges faced by women in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area who are unemployed, underemployed, or homeless.

Through strategic partnerships with organizations like Microsoft, NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers), and MBS.Tech, MSC provides access to advanced workforce development resources, specialized training, and professional networks that empower women to thrive in today’s job market.

Our programs include career coaching, job readiness workshops, professional attire, and mentorship, ensuring participants gain the skills and confidence needed to secure stable, long-term employment. With the support of these partnerships, MSC bridges gaps in technology and engineering fields, offering participants unique opportunities to enter high-demand industries.

By fostering both professional growth and personal empowerment, MSC helps women achieve financial independence, break the cycle of poverty and homelessness, and build sustainable futures for themselves and their families.
